Reaching Out to Reduce Early Turns
Van Nuys Airport urges pilots to comply with its “No Early Turn” policy to proactively reduce the impact of airport operations on the community. With 24-hour monitoring, this noise mitigation program detects pilots who turn too early after departure and fly over adjacent
Under the “No Early Turn” policy:
- Pilots departing Runways 16L and 16R are requested to fly runway heading until reaching the Sepulveda Flood Control Basin (south of Victory Boulevard) before initiating any turns.
- Pilots departing Runways 34L and 34R are requested to fly runway heading until reaching an altitude of 1,800’ mean sea level before initiating any turns.
- All operations are ultimately subject to instructions provided by Air Traffic Control.
Airport Noise Management personnel notify pilots of operations conducted contrary to this program and continuously educate aircraft owners and operators of noise abatement procedures. VNY has also conducted outreach to regional flight schools, added a “No Early Turn” message on the
airfield blast fence and inserted “No Early Turn” instructions in the Airport Facility Directory to increase compliance.
In addition, the new VNY Pilot Guide now depicts visual landmarks, noise sensitive areas and noise abatement procedures to encourage both based and transient pilots to fly friendly. For more information, visit
